‘… VICTORIA – The debate over an age old Victoria tradition continues. A group of animal activists marched through the streets of downtown calling for an end to the horse drawn carriage industry.
They point to last week’s freak accident when a horse was struck by a tour bus in Chinatown as proof the carriages don’t belong on busy city streets. They want the city of Victoria to revoke the existing licences and then ban them outright.
The city says there is a delicate balance to be struck. Carriage companies are currently regulated and a close eye is kept on the horses.
Tourists downtown say they love the carriage rides but many choose to stick to James Bay and Beacon Hill Park – where there are less cars …’
