‘BUAV to speak at Helsinki Chemicals Forum about alternatives to end animal testing’

Posted on May 24, 2012

Today (24th May), the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) posted a news item on their web-site titled ‘BUAV to speak at Helsinki Chemicals Forum about alternatives to end animal testing’.

‘… The BUAV Science Advisor, Dr Katy Taylor, is in Helsinki this week speaking at one of the largest international annual events for the chemical industry. The Helsinki Chemicals Forum is an independent forum engaging international authorities, politicians, industry leaders, NGOs, academia and the media in an open dialogue on key issues of global relevance regarding chemicals policy and the control of chemicals safety.  See www.helsinkicf.eu

Dr Taylor, representing the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), has been invited by the organisers of the event to speak about our experiences with the implementation of alternative methods to animal chemicals testing. She will be joining a panel of international experts to debate the issues in front of the live audience.

Dr Taylor’s speech will deal specifically with the financial, bureaucratic and attitudinal barriers that make it hard for new alternative methods to be accepted and used by industry. She will ask the industry and regulators if they really are doing all they can to ensure that alternatives are promoted and that animal testing is avoided.

The BUAV,along with our partners in the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments, is the lead organisation campaigning against the animal testing requirements under REACH, the European chemicals testing regime. We have already been successful in saving millions of animals from being cruelly subjected to toxicity tests, which traditionally involve the poisoning of guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and mice. We are continuing to work as hard as we can to save the lives of many more.
