Canada: weekly protest outside restaurant against shark fin soup

Posted on August 25, 2012

Today (25th August), an item was posted on the web-site of the Vancouver Animal Defense League titled ‘Fortune Garden Seafood LYING’, about a protest against shark fin soup held yesterday outside a restaurant in Vancouver.

‘… Fortune Garden Seafood at 1475 West Broadway ((604) 736-6868) has been the target of our protests for 7 weeks now because of their sale of shark fin soup.  They have a large selection of shark fin soup on the menu including one they say is Tiger shark, which is a near threatened species.

Tonight during our protest, several of their customers came out of the restaurant to tell us that the managers are claiming that the shark fins on their menu come from ‘farmed sharks’ in Taiwan.  The problem is, there is no such thing as shark farms anywhere in the world where sharks are being farmed for their fins.
Fortune Garden Seafood sells shark fin soup made from the fins of wild sharks that were caught with long lines in the open ocean.  Why is it that they feel they can lie to the public about what they are selling?  Not only is that shameful, it’s illegal.
We intend to continue our protests on Friday nights from 6:30 – 8:30PM until they remove shark fin soup from their menu …’
