Posted on October 11, 2012

Today (11th October), the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) posted a news item on their web-site titled ‘BUAV welcomes political support over alarming rise in animal experiments in Scotland’.

‘… The BUAV has welcomed a motion put forward by John Mason MSP calling for the government to honour its pledge to reduce the record number of animal experiments in Scotland, whilst commending the good work of the BUAV to end animal research.

The motion, tabled by the Glasgow Shettleston MSP, follows an 11% increase in the number of animal experiments taking place in Scotland, rising to over 600,000 in 2011. Alarmingly, over the last four years the number of Scottish animal experiments has increased by over 75%.

Today, nearly one-fifth of all animal experiments in Great Britain are carried out in Scotland.

John Mason, Scottish National Party MSP for Glasgow Shettleston said, “I’ve been working with the BUAV for a number of years, and was proud to be the first politician to commit to only using cruelty-free cleaning products in my office. I’m equally pleased to support their call to the UK Government to honour its pledge to reduce the number of animal experiments.

I was shocked to learn of the 11% increase in animal experiments being carried out in Scotland. It is important that the Scottish Parliament has the opportunity to debate these issues so that the view of our constituents can be aired. I hope that colleague from all parties will join me in signing motion S4M-04386 to ensure that this issue gets the debate it deserves.”

The BUAV Chief Executive, Michelle Thew said,We welcome John Mason’s supportive motion to reduce the shocking number of animal experiments in Scotland. Animal experiments are an issue of strong public concern and we call on the public to write to their MSP and urge them to sign this important motion affecting the lives of thousands of animals suffering in Scotland’s laboratories.” …’
