Today (16th October), the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) posted a news item on their web-site titled ‘The League welcomes W H Smith age restriction on shooting titles’.

‘… The League Against Cruel Sports congratulates WH Smith on its decision not to sell shooting magazines to children under the age of 14, describing the move as a “sensible step in the right direction”.

Under the new initiative and as part of the store’s commitment to operate the business responsibly, shooting titles such as Shooting Times, Shooting Sports and Sporting Gun will have a till prompt applied within WH Smith stores to ensure any customers attempting to buy these types of magazine are over 14 years old.

Joe Duckworth, Chief Executive at the League Against Cruel Sports comments:  “We welcome and praise the decision made by WH Smith in applying an age limit to shooting titles. Shooting publications typically feature shooters and young children posing boastfully with shot birds, rabbits, deer and foxes.

“Magazines that encourage and celebrate the slaughter of animals for fun, in the name of sport, need to be treated as such and should not be sold to impressionable children.  It is a disturbing truth that the shooting lobby invests in encouraging young influential children to take up shooting animals for sport.

“WH Smith, as the country’s biggest newsagent, leads the way in helping to prevent these magazines, often used as recruitment propaganda, from falling into influential children’s hands.”

The League is asking for individuals to write to WH Smith and congratulate them for addressing this issue, using the below address:
