‘Green MEP saddened by resumption of live exports and calls for legislation to be fully enforced’

Today (1st November), an item was posted on the web-site of Green MEP Keith Taylor titled ‘Green MEP saddened by resumption of live exports and calls for legislation to be fully enforced’.

‘… As live exports resume from the Port of Ramsgate, following the death in transit of 45 sheep last month, Keith Taylor MEP has written to Defra to ensure legislation in place to protect the welfare of animals in transit is fully enforced.

Keith said “As a Green MEP, I am opposed to live exports of animals from the UK. In the meantime I believe that member states must fully enforce current EU rules protecting animals in transit and that at EU level the regulation must also be strengthened to better protect animals.”

“Animal welfare organisations continue to expose that EU standards on animal transportation are often not being met and animals are being transported in poor conditions resulting in exhaustion, dehydration and, in some cases, death in transit. I believe this is unacceptable.”

Keith has this week written to the Minister of Agriculture, David Heath MP asking what measures are in place to ensure these violations cease and highlights the strong public opinion against this unnecessary trade.

Keith has also recently written to European Commissioner Dalli urging him to ensure better enforcement of EU animal welfare standards and to consider the introduction of an eight-hour maximum journey limit for animal transportation across the EU, as a step towards ending all live exports.
