‘Welsh government leads the way in badger vaccination’

Today (30th November), an item was posted on the web-site of the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) titled ‘Welsh government leads the way in badger vaccination’.

‘… The League Against Cruel Sports has welcomed the news from the Welsh Government that over 1,400 badgers have already been vaccinated against bovine TB in parts of west Wales, known as an Intensive Action Area (IAA).
This is the first year of a five year programme of work to eradicate TB completely in Wales. The Welsh Government is also looking at further options to develop the vaccination programme and expand it into other areas. These are currently being considered by the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales, Dr Christianne Glossop and Environment Minister, John Griffiths AM.

The badger vaccination initiative in Wales reflects the constructive alternative to culling that the League, along with our partners in “Team Badger”, are calling for. It also demonstrates the co-operation that is possible between the farming industry and government in taking swift, positive and decisive action against the spread of Bovine TB.
The EFRA (Environment Food and Rural Affairs) Select Committee in England has announced an inquiry into a TB vaccination for cattle and badgers, which is due to report early next year. We call upon the English Government to follow the example of their Welsh colleagues in developing a similar vaccination programme so that all nations within the United Kingdom can move toward the ultimate goal of being completely free of TB …’
