Today (7th January), the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) posted a news item on their web-site titled ‘BUAV disappointment over Government commitment to take action on animal experiments following publication of its Mid-Term Review’.
‘… The BUAV has called into question the Coalition Government’s commitment to take action on animal experiments after no mention of the issue was made in the Mid-Term Review published today.
When the Programme for Government was originally published in 2010 there were two specific pledges in relation to animals in laboratories, namely to work to reduce the use of animals in scientific research and to end the testing of household products on animals.
Since 2010 however, the number of animals used in experiments in Great Britain has reached a 25-year high figure of 3.79 million, while there has been no move to ban the testing of household products on animals.
The BUAV has been leading the way in holding the Government to account over these pledges, working with MPs to table Early Day Motions in the House of Commons which have attracted the support of over 200 MPs and recently hosting a reception where a new five-step plan for reducing the number of animals used in research was launched.
BUAV Chief Executive Michelle Thew said “It was encouraging that the Government initially appeared to be serious about the issue of animal experiments when it came to power. However, we are disappointed by the lack of progress so far and the failure to mention either of these pledges in the Mid-Term Review.”
The BUAV will continue to speak out for animals in laboratories and campaign to place their plight on the political agenda …’
