Body Shop and Leona Lewis support global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics

Posted on February 28, 2013

Today (28th February), the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) posted a news item on their web-site titled ‘The Body Shop together with their new brand activist Leona Lewis is supporting the Cruelty Free International global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics’.

‘… We are delighted to announce that The Body Shop and their new brand activist, Leona Lewis, the British singer and global superstar, are supporting the Cruelty Free International global campaign to end animal testing for cosmetics worldwide.

With the EU ban on animal testing for cosmetics which comes into effect on March 11th this year, Cruelty Free International and The Body Shop are working together globally to ensure the rest of the world follows this lead and ends animal testing for cosmetics forever.

Cruelty Free International Chief Executive, Michelle Thew said:We are delighted to receive the support of The Body Shop and Leona Lewis, their new brand activist, for our global mission to end cosmetics testing on animals. The EU ban is an historic event and the culmination of over 20 years of campaigning. We shall now apply our expertise and determination on a global stage to ensure that the rest of the world follows this lead.

The final phase of the 7th amendment of the EU Cosmetics Directive comes into force on 11th March 2013. After this date, no new cosmetic products and ingredients on sale in the EU can be tested on animals anywhere in the world. The ban affects all cosmetics including all toiletries and beauty products, from soap to toothpaste. This ground breaking victory follows over 20 years of campaigning by the BUAV and our partners in the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE). The ban sends a strong message worldwide in support of cruelty free beauty, and in particular to countries such as China, who still demand animal testing for cosmetics, to also respond and ban testing on animals.

Cruelty Free International is a global organization, established by the BUAV, with a mission to end animal testing for cosmetics worldwide. We work with governments, regulators companies and partner organizations around the world to introduce a ban on the testing of animals for cosmetic products and ingredients. We have placed the issue of animal testing on the agenda of many governments for the very first time as part of a global strategy to tackle product testing.
