Yesterday (27th February), the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) posted a news item on their web-site titled ‘League’s reaction to summer 2013 badger cull’.

‘… Pilot badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire have been approved

The League Against Cruel Sports is saddened and outraged to hear that the Government has announced that the cull of thousands of badgers in England will go ahead this summer.

Plans for the two pilot culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire were first due to go ahead last autumn, but were postponed.

Today the Government however gave the scheme the green light, ignoring scientific, parliamentary and overwhelming public opinion.

In a statement released today, Defra confirmed that the final licences had been granted and that the culls will commence from June 2013. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson also announced a third reserve pilot cull area is being prepared in Dorset.

League Against Cruel Sports Chief Executive Joe Duckworth said: “The Government’s determination to go ahead with the badger cull this summer once again proves how misguided and out of step with scientific fact and public opinion it is on this issue. Culling badgers is not the answer to eradicating bovine TB. Not only is the practice inhumane and impractical. It is also proven to be ineffective in tackling the disease, as has been made repeatedly clear by all the leading scientific experts.

“There is also a viable alternative: vaccination, which Team Badger, a growing coalition of like minded animal welfare organisations, is committed to, as made clear in our recent written submission to the EFRA Committee. Team Badger strongly condemns the Government’s support for this barbaric policy and we remain committed to working together and with others to stop the cull going ahead.”

Below is the reaction to the Badger cull from Team Badger, (of which the League is a member):

“The Government’s plan to go ahead with the pilot badger cull this summer in west Gloucestershire, west Somerset or part of Dorset flies in the face of scientific fact as well as public and parliamentary opinion.

Culling badgers is not the answer to eradicating bovine TB. Not only is the practice inhumane and impractical, it is also ineffective in tackling the disease, as has been made repeatedly clear by leading scientific experts and studies.

Team Badger, a growing coalition of like minded animal welfare organisations, showed in our recent submission to the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Committee of the House of Commons that vaccination of badgers provides a viable, practical approach to disease control made even more effective ny increased on-farm, bio security measures.

Team Badger is committed to continuing to work with others both to promote vaccination and to act within the law to stop the cull going from ahead.” …’
